Salard addresses Wrangell Medical Center Board

At the Wrangell Medical Center Board meeting March 28, local physician Greg Salard told board members he has no intention of leaving town despite his hospital privileges being revoked.

“I have full intentions of getting my credentials back one way or the other, and my wife and kids and I are not going anywhere,” he said.

WMC board members, acting as a separate committee, voted in early March to deny Salard the right to continue to work at the city-owned hospital. Salard is a physician employed by Alaska Island Community Services, and was previously under contract to work at WMC on a temporary basis.

Salard had applied for permanent privileges at WMC, but the board members denied that application.

Salard has filed a civil suit in trial court appealing the WMC board’s decision.

Later in last week’s board meeting, WMC Chief Executive Officer Noel Selle-Rea said the hospital’s malpractice and doctors’ and officers’ insurance provider had agreed to fully cover the costs of any legal proceedings related to Salard’s case.

Also at the board meeting, Selle-Rea said Dr. Lynn Prysunka has signed on as the WMC’s long-term care medical director, which will allow the hospital to focus on the quality of the nursing home.

“We’re excited to have her on board,” Selle-Rea said.

He also said recordings of WMC Board meetings will now be available to the public at the Irene Ingle Public Library.
