Community markets to begin next month

Wrangell’s inaugural community market season begins next month with what is expected to feature a number of vendors selling locally-grown-and-made veggies, breads and artwork throughout the summer.

The first community market is scheduled for May 19 at the covered play area next to Evergreen Elementary School on Bennett Street.

Markets will continue every third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through September.

At a market meeting last week, interested vendors and members of the volunteer steering committee discussed possibly holding an additional market during the week of the Fourth of July. The market would ideally take place downtown, the group agreed, to attract the crowds created by the July 4 events in Wrangell.

“It’s not a bad idea to take advantage of all those extra people,” said Dave Sweat, owner of Klondike Bikes who may provide bike-related services at the markets.

Those interested in being a vendor at the markets — the possible Fourth of July, or regularly scheduled monthly markets — can fill out a vendor registration form and turn it into Kris Reed or Katherine Ivy, members of the volunteer market steering committee.

Ivy said people could drop off registration forms at the organic veggie van parked weekly on Tuesday along Front Street from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Reed asked interested vendors to notify organizers they will participate as soon as possible, but no later than 24 hours before a market, in order to advertise the event. Vendors are required to have any necessary permits to sell their good at the markets, she said.

Vendors are charged $5 for every market they participate in, or they can pay a flat fee of $20 for all five of this year’s markets.

That money will go towards advertising costs, Reed said.

Additional market dates are set for June 16, July 21, Aug. 18 and Sept. 15.
