A Juneau man is facing a number of felony and misdemeanor counts in Wrangell’s First District Court after allegedly stealing a vehicle and driving it into a ditch while allegedly drunk.
36-year old Nathan J. Giske was arrested May 14 after a Wrangell police officer observed him walking away from the vicinity of a white van that had been left in the ditch near the north entrance to the airport.
According to the complaint filed in court, the officer attempted to locate Giske after discovering the wreckage but was unable to locate him until 30 minutes later. Giske was next seen near the ferry terminal where he was stopped by police and questioned. The complaint states that Giske had “a very strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath and person, had poor balance, slurred speech, and watery bloodshot eyes.”
Giske is also alleged to have assaulted the owner of the van, a Wrangell fishing vessel owner, and to have attempted to chop down the vessel’s stateroom door with an axe before leaving in the vehicle.
Giske is charged with vehicle theft, criminal mischief, assault, attempted extortion, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a chemical test. He is currently being held at the Ketchikan Correctional Center and bail is set at $10,000.
