The work on Wrangell’s downtown roads is moving along at a healthy pace – and could see Front Street poured and opened up as far as Campbell Drive by the Fourth of July weekend.
The most recent report by the project management team and contractors involved in the Wrangell Roads and Utilities Improvement project are painting a rosy picture for the completion of the downtown revitalization and believe the project is on schedule.
Project engineer Eric Voorhees said he believes a significant portion of the main street through downtown Wrangell will be ready by the national holiday.
“I think, right now, we’re set up very well to be past the Campbell Drive intersection by the Fourth of July,” Voorhees said. “The weather, if it gets really bad, could throw a hiccup into our schedule and slow us down. I think with the good weather we have had we’re on time and pushing ahead.”
During the past two weeks the project has seen completion of the concrete pavement from the city dock to the McKinnon Street intersection, sub-excavation to Lynch Street, with the retaining wall at City Market nearing completion. Light poles have also been mounted in the cul-de-sac.
According to Voorhees, work is continuing this week on installing sanitary sewer lines, storm drains and water utilities to Episcopal Street. Concrete installation will also continue between McKinnon Street and Lynch Street.
The next meeting of the project partners will be June 7 at 10 a.m. in the city hall assembly chambers.
