Eight candidates file to run for U.S. House seat

With the deadline for candidates to file for Alaska State Senate and House of Representatives seats, as well as U.S. House of Representatives passing last Friday, June 8, we now know the slate of hopefuls looking to unseat Representative Don Young.

In the race to face off with Young, five Democrats have filed for the seat held by the Anchorage Republican – Sharon Cissna of Anchorage, Matt Moore of Anchorage, Doug Urquidi of Eagle River, Frank Vondersaar of Homer and Debra Chesnut of Fairbanks.

Two Republicans have filed for the primary as well, with John R. Cox of Anchor Point and Terre L. Gales of Eagle River attempting to wrest the GOP nomination away from Rep. Young.

Jim C. McDermott of Fairbanks is running as a Libertarian.

Rep. Young has held his seat since 1973 and is the senior member of the Alaska delegation. He is also the No. 2 ranking Republican in Congress.

On June 7, Alaska Attorney General Mead Treadwell signed regulations to adopt new precinct boundaries for the elections based on the redistricting plan approved by the Alaska Supreme Court on May 22. The U.S. Department of Justice is still reviewing the plan, however, to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act.

The primary election to select party candidates for the general election is Aug. 28. The general election is Nov. 6.

City and borough elections are on Oct. 2 and, according to Borough Clerk Christie Jamieson, the window to file for local offices will be during the entire month of August.
