The annual KSTK/Alaska Power and Telephone golf tournament was held last weekend on June 16 – and though heavy rains fell, the spirit and competitiveness of the participants was apparent as the team of Wayne and Kathleen Harding took home a No. 1 spot with their net 26 (20 handicap) score.
The tournament, which was a 9-hole “2-person best-ball” format, was a fundraising event for KSTK, which relies on community support to keep the lights on and transmitter broadcasting around the borough and online.
Cindy Sweat, the station’s interim General Manager, said money raised helps keep the station on the air.
“The public radio station is funded by listener support, as well as local businesses and organizations like Muskeg Meadows,” Sweat said. “It’s a way of raising money for the station by having businesses sponsor holes. Helping us this way is how we keep public radio on the air in Wrangell.”
The team of George Woodbury and his son, Brett Woodbury, came in at the No. 2 spot with a net 30 (10 handicap) score. Third place went to Wayne and Chris Ellis with a net 30 (18 handicap) score.
The straightest drive of the day went to Faye Kohrt with a 6-foot 3-inch drive, while Roxanne Yancey was closest to the pin at 28-feet 4-inches.
Alaska Power and Telephone was the overall sponsor of the event.
On Sunday, June 17, Elk’s Lodge B.P.O.E. 1595 held their annual best-ball tournament under less than optimal weather conditions – and with 22 players duffing it out for the special Father’s Day event.
“We want to thank everyone who came out and braved the uncooperative weather conditions to make this very special Elks Father’s Day tournament possible,” said Muskeg Meadows co-manager Shannon Booker.
The team of Carrie Wallace, Perry Brink, Bill Messmer and John Morse took the No. 1 spot with a net 22 (16 handicap) final score, while the team of George and Brett Woodbury, Noel Rea, and Donald Groom finished with a score net 24 (14 handicap.)
The team of Greg Scheff, Ed Rilatos, Christopher Stuart and Jerry Bakeburg tied for 2nd place and co-manager Grover Mathis had to use the lowest recorded strokes on Hole 8 to determine the tiebreaker.
Carrie Wallace won the straightest drive with a 6-foot 2 inch drive.
Muskeg will host the annual R&M Engineering tournament this weekend, June 23-24. Saturday will feature an 18-hole 2-person best-ball format beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday’s golf will feature a 9-hole best-ball format starting at 9 a.m. as well.
