Church of God skating rink getting a facelift

The Church of God is sponsoring a Back to School skating party for all students in Wrangell on Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. at the church skating rink.

Richard and Donna Fincher, the new pastor of the Church of God, and his wife, have been busy renovating the rink and will be offering to let the students of Wrangell skate there on a regular basis.

One young Wrangellite, Luke Kowalske, said he is looking forward to the chance to use the rink.

“I’m so glad to be able to go to a skating rink,” he said. “I love skating and I can’t wait to be with my friends.”

According to the Finchers you don’t have to have your own skates to use the rink as they have pairs available to borrow.

“We have skates and they are going to be provided within the cost of using the rink,” Richard said.

There is a charge for using the rink, for each 2-hour period that skaters use the facility.

The new improvements to the rink will be ready later this month, and Fincher said he is excited about seeing them.

“The youth need something here in this community and we want them to have something fun,” he added. “The back-to-school party is something we wanted to offer as a way for kids to have fun before going back to classes.”

In order to get the rink ready, several Wrangellites have been involved, Fincher added.

“We’ve had a lot of help from Cindy Martin, Courtney Haggard, and my son, Johnathan Fincher,” he added.
