Wrangell wrestlers on the road to 2012 season

The Wrangell Wolves wrestling season gets underway next month, as the team will travel north on Oct. 12-13 to face off against, among others, their archrival Petersburg Vikings team.

Head coach Jeff Rooney said he’s looking forward to the season and his strong talent pool.

“It’s going to be good year,” Rooney said. “We have a lot of guys coming back and a few new up-and-comers. By this week we’ll have a meeting as a team and start pre-season workouts. I think we’ll have a good shot for some titles and victories because we tentatively have 8 seniors coming back this year.”

Petersburg’s head coach and native Wrangellite, Marty Massin, said he is looking forward to hosting the first tournament of the season and to have the Wolves take part.

“I’m looking forward to this and it should be a tight race between us and Wrangell,” Massin said of his Vikings squad. “I can’t wait to see all the kids and coaches from over there. I grew up over there wrestling, so I’m pretty good friends with all the coaches. It’s going to be fun. I imagine we’ll get a lot of small schools from around the area to come down.”

Massin, who graduated in 1988 for Wrangell High School, is a two-time Alaska State 3A champion in wrestling.

Wrangell will not host any tournaments this season, with its annual meet against the Vikings rotating north for 2012. Their next meet after Petersburg will take them to Sitka on Oct. 19-20, with the ACS Invitational coming up Oct. 26-27 in Anchorage.
