Front Street nears wrap

If all goes according to plan, the Front Street improvement project in downtown Wrangell should wrap up within the month of September.

In their second-to-last scheduled meeting, the project team met at City Hall on Thursday, Aug. 30 in the Borough Assembly chambers to discuss the wrap-up of construction and reopening of roads through town.

According to project engineer Eric Voorhees and superintendent Mike Ashton, the end is in sight for the renovation.

“All underground utility installations for the project are complete,” their bi-weekly report stated. “Concrete work to Episcopal Street is complete with the exception of the St. Michael’s Street intersection and Episcopal Street intersection.”

Concrete work has also been continuing towards Case Avenue. All light pole bases have been set, except for four luminaires that are currently being installed. Roadway lighting is now operational to the SNO Building.

This week, concrete curb and gutter installation will continue, along with sidewalk and roadway towards Case Avenue. The installation of street signs and soil are also a focus of crews this week.

“We are pleased to announce that we have completed all of the underground utilities for this job and are now working at completing the installation of the remaining concrete,” Ashton stated in an email. “Progress will be swift for the remaining work, beginning with the re-opening of Episcopal road (this) week for access to City Market/Sentry. Once this is opened we will be shutting down the St. Michaels Road to complete this intersection.”

The project team anticipates re-opening the Case Avenue intersection sometime in the middle of September.

The next, and final, meeting of the project team is set for Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. in the Borough Assembly chambers. Project completion is still set for Sept. 21.
