Rain hampers end of season at Muskeg Meadows

Sometimes Mother Nature cooperates with a business endeavor – and sometimes, she doesn’t at all.

Such is the case at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course over the past few weeks, with rainouts and generally bad weather delaying the end of their 2012 season by at least a week.

Of the two tournaments that had been planned for last weekend, the “Two clubs and a putter,” tournament was cancelled on Saturday, with the Breakaway Adventures’ end-of-the-season event rounding out the year on Sept. 9.

Grover Mathis, the co-manager of the course said the rains have made it nearly impossible for players to get an accurate game just about anywhere on the nine.

“We have standing water on about every fairway except Hole No. 1,” Mathis said. “You can’t golf in standing water because the face of the club has difficulty connecting with the ball when it travels through water. When you hit the ball in those conditions, it can go just about anywhere.”

Faye Kohrt, the runner up for the club’s championship last month, said she does her best to avoid standing water when she plays.

“I try to stay out of the water by using one of my free drops,” she said, and then adding jokingly, “I play a little better in wet conditions, but I still try to avoid the water unless I’m in a pond.”

The Breakaway tournament ended with Glacier Larson and club champion Randy Littleton taking the top spot with a score of 42 (net 28) and a 14 handicap. The straightest drive came from Keene Kohrt on a 23-foot, 3-and-a-half inch drive. Closest to the pin went to George Woodbury with a 182-inch shot.

The course will close for the winter on Friday, Sept. 14. The 2013 season is set to begin on Monday, April 1 – weather permitting, of course.
