Wrangell’s radio station, KSTK FM, brought their newest reporter on board this week with the addition of veteran journalist Ariel Van Cleve to the station’s staff.
Van Cleve, who most recently worked as a reporter at KDLG FM in Dillingham, comes to the station with a background in broadcast journalism and holds a Masters in Public Affairs Broadcasting from the University of Illinois at Springfield.
Prior to her time in Alaska, she worked as an intern at WCBU in Peoria, Ill. from 2004-07, as an intern at Illinois Radio Network covering state government in 2008, and was a reporter and host at WBAA in West Lafayette, Ind. from 2008-10.
KSTK General Manager Mike Symons said the addition of Van Cleve would enhance the station’s ability to cover more local news and topics.
“We’re excited to finally have a full-time news person back on staff,” Symons said. “We’re committed to local news coverage every day and we have been doing it to a lesser capacity, so now I feel we’re back on track.”
Van Cleve describes herself as a “total NPR and music nerd,” who likes to, “enjoy a good cup of coffee and a slice of pie.” She also said she has a soft spot for British television, especially Doctor Who, and loves to travel.
Her first day on-air at KSTK was Monday, Sept. 17.
