Beginning in early October, two business owners will be combining forces to bring fresh organic foods and healthy baked goods to Wrangellites on a consistent basis.
Katherine Ivy, the owner and operator of Tuesday Organics, and Lorena Cano opened Ivy Patch Produce/Bayside Bakery and Market at 628 Shakes Street this week. The store will be located in the space next to the Laundromat that previously housed Island Salon, which recently moved to Lynch Street.
Ivy said the collaborative effort will unite the small businesses and help their bottom-lines.
“Neither of us could afford to do this on our own,” Ivy said. “Plus, we’re both very small businesses. I have been operating out of the van for a couple of years, after Dan Trail started it nearly a decade ago. It’s gotten bigger over the last couple of years and now we’re bursting at the seams.”
The traditional location of the Tuesday Organics van, in the parking lot adjacent to Wells Fargo, will no longer be used.
“We won’t have the van anymore. It’s better to be here, though, because you can only fit one or two people in at a time, and people have to stand in the rain and snow,” Ivy said. “Bulk and packaged organics will also be added.”
The bakery, which will be an extension of business efforts Cano has already undertaken in Wrangell, will better serve her customers by offering more fare – and being indoors.
“I was selling cinnamon rolls down at Pirates Cove and the weather was starting to change, and I didn’t want to be out in the cold,” Cano added. “So, we decided to go in to this together when the space came open.”
In addition to her original cinnamon rolls, Cano will also offer cookies, pies and other baked goods.
