Wrangell Institute timber sale recommended

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Land Office has recommended a timber sale of approximately 1.2 million board feet of timber in the Wrangell area during the next two to three years.

The Trust parcels subject to this decision are located adjacent to the Wrangell Institute property currently owned by the City and Borough of Wrangell. The property is zoned as Timber Management under Title 20 of the Wrangell Municipal Code.

The proposed sale area is comprised of the parcel that will be conveyed as part of the Alaska Replacement Lands Program. An additional 200 acres will be included if financially feasible. The acreage was included in the Thorne Bay 2 timber sale and were either partially harvested or considered not viable at the time. Favorable markets have increased the value of young growth and small hemlock timber, which is now allowing the harvest of these areas to be considered.

The timber stands being considered are composed of Sitka spruce (39 percent), Western Hemlock (35 percent), Red Cedar (14 percent) and Alaska yellow cedar (12 percent).
