For some Wrangell residents, the holiday season can be a time of hunger when families find it hard to put food on the table.
For the ninth year in a row, the Wrangell Ministerial Association is looking to help feed families in need as they prepare for their annual Thanksgiving food basket drive.
Don and Bonnie Roher are once again leading the way to help Wrangellites who are less fortunate during the holidays by holding their food basket handout on Friday, Nov. 16 from 2-6 p.m. at the upper level of the Harbor Light Assembly of God church.
“We do this because it is important that people are well fed during this time and have the best holiday they can possibly have,” Bonnie said.
The cost of the baskets provided by the Rohers and the church has increased – but only slightly – this year as it will cost $51.71 to feed a family of 2-3, $58.89 to feed 4-6 family members, and $108.67 for a family of 7 or more. As with every year, the baskets will contain a turkey, stuffing, potato mix, cranberries, evaporated milk and mixed fruit and vegetables.
“Like last year, we’re still looking for folks that want to adopt a family and sponsor a basket or even help out with a cash donation to help buy the baskets,” Bonnie said. “We need to raise a total of $2,906 to make this happen this year.”
The Rohers, along with the church, assisted 82 families and a total of 212 individuals during the 2011 food basket drive.
Anyone wishing to help in the food drive can bring cash or checks to Harbor Light Pastor Kem Haggard, or call the Rohers at 305-0319.
