Wrangell Wolves wrestlers Tanner Thomassen and Kurt Dingwall are on a roll – courtesy of their latest 1st place wins at the Mt. Edgecumbe Invitational Tournament held Oct. 19-20 in Sitka.
Thomassen, a senior for the Wolves, was placed in the number one position of the varsity bracket as the tournament began - and he took on all comers – eventually defeating Sitka’s John Davis on a 3-1 decision call.
“Tanner continues to wrestle strong and brought home another first place finish for the Wolves,” said head coach Jeff Rooney. “Tanner enters every match with heart and determination and competes and finishes well every match. We see another great season coming from him and anticipate high placement as we approach each meet.”
That hope for top placement is almost a guarantee as Thomassen is ranked 3rd in the state in his 145-pound class.
Fellow Wolves senior Kurt Dingwall can also expect high placement in his coming tournaments – thanks to his top akmat.org ranking in the 138-pounder class across the State of Alaska.
Dingwall, who also entered the tournament as a top seed, dispatched every one of his opponents leading up to his victory win against Sitka’s Jaren Sumauang on a pin.
“Kurt was placed at the top of the varsity bracket for his weight class,” Rooney added. “As the number one seed, Kurt wrestled very well, advancing through his bracket and brought home another top place finish for the Wolves. I think he wrestles each match with determination rivaled by few, and with each victory he improves his standings in the state and we expect some great victories coming from him.”
Alex Cano and Jeff Rooney, Jr. each took home a 2nd place victory in the 120- and 170-pound classes, respectively. Jordan Veele made a 4th place showing in the 160-pound “B” grouping, while Asia Prus took 4th place as a 120-pounder.
In the 160-pound “A” group, junior Devon Miller fought hard for a No. 5 spot, which he shared with heavyweight Luke Gunderson. Austin Stevens (152) and Jacob Marshall (145) took 6th and 7th places respectively.
This week’s meet will take the Wolves to the annual ACS Invitational Tournament in Anchorage.
“The ACS meet is a great tournament for our wrestlers and a great opportunity to see the northern conference teams that we usually don’t get to see till the state competition,” Rooney added.
The Wolves will also host the Petersburg Vikings in a home dual on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Wrangell High School gym.
