The Lady Wolves basketball team now has a new head coach – officially.
The Wrangell Public Schools Board of Directors officially hired Dane Vincent, an educational aide at Wrangell High School and interim head coach of the squad, on Monday, Nov. 26 during their special session meeting.
WHS Activities Director Monty Buness said he is looking forward to a good season for the Lady Wolves under the tutelage of Vincent.
“I think we have some great returning players that should be able to put points on the board, so with Dane coaching, we should experience some success,” Buness said. “They should be aggressive defensively and successful this season.”
Senior MiKayla Stokes said she thoroughly enjoys playing under Vincent and is looking forward to the season.
“I’m really excited,” Stokes said. “He’s brought a lot of commitment and dedication to our team. He had us in the gym even before he knew he was going to be our coach and I’m really looking ahead to the teamwork he’ll be instilling in us.”
Vincent added that he wants input from the families of his players – and intends to use the assets his players have to their advantage.
“My plan for this year is to keep the team on track and work on the things we did well last year,” he said. “I really want to get the parents more involved too because that’s important. As far as the game plan goes, I think we have a lot of speed and a good group of freshmen coming up. We’re going to try to utilize that speed on the court as much as possible.”
The Lady Wolves begin their season this weekend, Dec. 13-15, at the Little Norway Tournament in Petersburg. Their first home game is tentatively set for homecoming against the Vikings Jan. 4-5.
