Police seeking leads in assault investigation

Wrangell Police Department officers are investigating allegations of an assault that led to the hospitalization of a 17-year old Wrangell High School student.

The incident, which is alleged to have occurred at a residence near the corner of Case Avenue and Front Street in the late evening hours of Saturday, Jan. 12, involved a party where allegedly a number of minors and at least two adults were present – and where WPD Lieutenant Merlin Ehlers said alcohol was a major contributing factor.

“We are investigating a number of individuals who were at this location,” Ehlers said. “There were several minors and at least two adults there during the incident. We can say that there was alcohol at this party and it was a major factor in what we think happened.”

Ehlers added that charges have been forwarded against one minor in connection with the alleged assault.

“Anyone who has relevant information needs to come talk to us,” Ehlers added. “The issue we are having is that our suspects and the witnesses have not been very cooperative, so we’re encouraging anyone who knows anything to come see us. There is more information that is needed to bring this to closure.”

Ehlers also added that any minors who were at the party and want to come forward should not be concerned with facing charges related to alcohol use.

“We’re not interested in any Minor in Consumption charges,” he added. “Just information on the alleged assault.”

According to Ehlers, the victim, who is a senior at WHS and a member of the Wolves’ wrestling team, was transported to Wrangell Medical Center where he was treated and released.

The investigation remains open and anyone with information is asked to call the WPD dispatch line at 874-3304.
