Lady Wolves end home run with win, loss

The Lady Wolves ended their 2012-13 home court run last weekend as they split a pair of games with the visiting Craig Lady Panthers.

The Friday night game was victorious for Wrangell as they took away a win in their 33-31 victory – and saw a game where the six-member Craig team got into foul trouble, leaving the door wide open for the Lady Wolves.

“Basically, they got into foul territory and only had one other girl to put in the game,” said head coach Dane Vincent. “With that player’s lack of experience, we were able to take advantage of it and add a few points that worked to our advantage. We also held up defensively.”

Outgoing senior and team co-captain MiKayla Stokes led the evening with 12 points, including a 6-for-8 showing from the free-throw line. Fellow senior captain Alyssa Allen added 6 points of her own, as did Kayla Rooney and Caroline Ward, who was perfect from the line at 2-for-2. Erica Smith put up 3 points as well in the win.

Stokes said the team played well on Friday by focusing.

“We came out really hard knowing we had to work together as a team,” Stoke said. “We were really aggressive, where our offense was very strong. It was a very low-scoring game and I think that is because our defense did very well too.”

Saturday night’s game was a little more difficult for the Lady Wolves, however, as Craig learned from their mistakes and stayed out of foul trouble for most of the matchup. Craig also had a player in double digits with the Lady Panther’s Katie Dinon, who had fouled out on Friday night, scoring 12 points.

“They stayed out of foul trouble on the second night and we got a little frustrated as a team,” Vincent added. “We just didn’t make shots. We had an opportunity to make easy lay-ups and we missed those, along with our free-throw percentage, which was way down. So, those are two areas we have to focus on going forward.”

Stokes led the scoring effort once again on Saturday night with 9 points. Allen added two buckets and a free throw for five, while sophomore Darian Meissner put up 4 points. Erica Smith nailed the only trey of the weekend for Wrangell for 3 points, and Kayla Rooney added two of her own. Katie Barger rounded out the scoring with a single point from the free throw line.

The Lady Wolves will travel to Petersburg this weekend for the Vikings’ homecoming. The Region V tournament at Mt. Edgecumbe High School is set for March 5-9.
