A blistering performance by Wolves senior captain Ryan Reeves was the highlight of last weekend’s trip to Craig for the Wrangell squad – and saw a heartbreaking loss in a game where Reeves scored in the double digits and more.
Reeves’ performance was on fire on Sunday night when he scored 21 points for the Wolves off six buckets, a pair of three-pointers, and going 3-for-5 from the line. The performance put forth by Reeves and company was so convincing that Wrangell led the Panthers at the end of the first and third periods.
The Panthers won the game 64-54.
Head coach Ray Stokes said his team played hard on their second night of the series.
“Sunday was the night I thought the kids played with a lot more emotion and mental toughness,” Stokes said. “That second night they came out and played a lot harder and kept the game in check from start to finish.”
Fellow captain Jacob Marshall followed Reeves with 8 points, which included a pair of shots from deep beyond the arc, and Blake Stokes with 7 points of his own – including a three-pointer. Bryce Gerald put up 6 points, with Robert Marshall, Aaron Howell and Devon Miller each adding 4 points during the game.
The night before, on Saturday, it was Blake Stokes’ and Howell’s turn to carry the water for the Wolves.
While Reeves was held to only two points in the first period, Stokes and Howell lit up the board for 13 points each, including six buckets by Howell.
Even though Blake Stokes and Howell were on fire, coach Stokes said he was not pleased with their output defensively – and the lack of offensive play coming from Reeves and the other upperclassmen in the 56-41 loss.
“I wasn’t very pleased on Saturday night, especially with my older players,” he added. “I thought they were a little too laid back and I actually think they got embarrassed a little bit on just how soft their playing was defensively. For Reeves, most of it was his own doing and he wasn’t very aggressive. For that he got to sit on the bench and see a younger kid go in there with some fire who had an impact.”
The Wolves will travel to Petersburg this weekend for the Vikings’ homecoming celebration.
