Marshall murder solicitation trial set for September

KETCHIKAN (KDN) – The trial for a Wrangell man accused of soliciting the murder of a woman he also is accused of raping and assaulting has been set for the end of September.

Steven R. Marshall, 53, appeared in Ketchikan Superior Court last week alongside his attorney, Paul Maslakowski. Judge William Carey presided over the hearing telephonically from Petersburg.

Marshall has been charged in Wrangell court on charges of first-degree assault, two counts of third-degree assault, and four counts of first-degree sexual assault, all alleged to have occurred between October and December of 2011 in Wrangell. He is alleged to have used a serrated knife and his hands in the assaults.

The murder solicitation case, which allegedly took place while Marshall was incarcerated in Ketchikan, stems from his alleged attempt to convince an unnamed individual to murder the alleged victim in his Wrangell case.

Marshall’s Wrangell case is scheduled to go to trial beginning April 15. His Ketchikan trial now is scheduled for Sept. 30. Carey pushed the murder solicitation trial to September in order for the Wrangell case to be tried first.

Marshall is being held at Ketchikan Correctional Center on $100,000 bail.
