In May of 2011 a group of six local women from various age groups, backgrounds, experience and interest formed a steering committee to form what is now Hannah’s Place, Inc. It was agreed that there is a need in our community especially for young women, but not limited to just the young women, to have access to information, education and support when they are making difficult decisions about their future. In July of 2011 Hannah’s Place became a non-profit obtaining 501c3 status. For the next year many hours of research, paperwork and time brought the organization to the point in September of 2012 to form an official board of seven women representing many different areas of our community. In January of 2013 a consultant from California was in Wrangell to train the board and volunteers who will be involved with Hannah’s Place. The group of 20 women who took the class received 22 hours of instruction. They have completed necessary paperwork to provide unconditional confidential assistance to other women in need. Much work has gone into setting up the facility (the Presbyterian manse) with a target to open in mid April. This Saturday there will be an Open House from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Join us for refreshments, tour the facility, visit with our board members and volunteers.
Hannah’s Place mission statement is to be Informing, Networking and Caring, to be achieved through numerous ways such as: Prenatal Classes, Life Skill Classes, Parenting Programs, Community Referrals, Peer Counseling for healing and support, Pregnancy Tests and a Mommy Store. The ‘Mommy Store’ is designed as an incentive program to assist young mothers in obtaining the material items needed for a baby and is called Earn While You Learn. As a mother attends classes in a chosen interest she will be given ‘Mommy Money’ that she can then spend in one of the two rooms we have developed, one for new items, one for lightly used items.
