The Sealaska board of directors announced last week that Richard Rinehart, Jr. has been selected to fill an open seat on the 13-member board. Rinehart fills a board term that will end at the Sealaska annual meeting in 2013. Clarence Jackson, Sr. of Kake previously held the seat.
After the passing of Director Jackson in January, Sealaska followed a process to fill the vacant seat that allowed for open submissions from shareholders. The Sealaska Nominations Committee met several times to review the nominations process and discuss the qualifications of applicants. From the pool, the Board acted to fill the vacancy as authorized by state law and the corporation’s bylaws.
“The response to the call for applications and nominations was tremendous, and truly reflects the wide range of experience and skills our tribal member shareholders possess,” stated board president Albert Kookesh. “Mr. Rinehart brings with him an impressive business acumen and a passion for working on behalf of Alaska Natives, and the Sealaska Board is fortunate to have his service.”
Rinehart has a master's degree in business administration from Portland State University. He is a certified management accountant and financial manager. He worked at Sealaska as Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Controller between 2003-2009. He currently serves as a managing member at Raven Potlatch Real Estate in Bellevue, Wash.
“I am humbled to have been selected for the Sealaska Board and appreciate the opportunity to serve the shareholders,” Rinehart said. “My professional goals have always included working for our Native communities and being part of innovative solutions to the issues facing our people and our corporation. While no one could think to replace Director Clarence Jackson, I will do my best to honor his legacy.”
Rinehart is Tlingit and Haida, Kiks.ádi, Raven/Frog and is originally from Wrangell.
