The Lady Wolves softball team has hit the diamond at the city fields – and are beginning work toward their 2013 season with a pair of seniors leading the way and head coach Kathleen Harding at the helm once again.
In 2012 the squad finished last season with a convincing 20-7 win over the Craig Lady Panthers at home, but only after overcoming a 26-38 loss in the two-game opener. It was during the win that Wrangell’s McKenna Harding and Alyssa Allen had back-to-back homers.
Allen, and fellow senior Briana Schilling are the only seniors on the team this year, which number 14 players. Schilling said she is looking forward to playing her final year in red and white, no matter the outcome.
“Last year was fun and I had a good time,” Schilling said. “We won one and lost one against Craig in our closer, but I am really excited for this season because it is my last year and there is a lot of players, so I think we’ll be able to go out and have fun in our games. I want to win because that is what we are striving for, but if we don’t I just love my team and want to go out there and play.”
With her fastball beckoning, sophomore Marsha McCay will most likely be one of the high-powered pitchers coming out of the bullpen for the Lady Wolves this season.
“This year’s group has a lot of new girls, but I think we can do it because we are improving a lot every day,” McCay said. “We’re playing like a team, and when it comes to playing, my favorite part is being in the outfield because that is where the action is.”
According to Harding, Petersburg High School’s Lady Vikings may have enough players for a team this season, which would lead to a rivalry series between the two schools.
“Petersburg is supposed to have a team, so we want to go out there and have some fun with them,” Harding said. “Craig is still working on getting a team and last I heard they were one player shy, but their coach isn’t giving up hope yet. We have 14 girls this season, with two seniors, and some juniors who have played since they were freshmen, as well as a good crop of freshmen, so it’ll be a fun bunch this year.”
WHS activities director Monty Buness has not yet released the final schedule for the Lady Wolves 2013 season.
