After what seems like an eternity of wind, rain, snow and generally horrid weather all winter, the staff at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course has opened for business and is poised for the 2013 season to begin.
Course manager Shannon Booker said that while the course is currently open for both rounds on the links and for use of the driving range, the kickoff of the course’s season will begin early next month.
“The Angerman’s Tournament will be May 4-5 and we are expecting up to 20 participants for that event,” she said. “Hopefully, on Saturday the 4th, we’ll have a bit more people here because of the rededication of Shakes Island.”
The fairways at the course, which underwent significant damage last year because of the ubiquitous raven population of Wrangell Island, are in better shape according to Booker – but she added that the season is still young and she will be watching the progress in keeping the course playable.
“The course condition, right now, is okay,” she added. “The ravens have stopped doing their thing for now, but there is no real grass yet so, as far as the moss goes, I think just coming out of winter, there is no great amount of bird food for them yet.”
The club’s annual dinner and auction is set for May 11.
Booker also added that new netting at the course’s driving range will be completed and in place by August.
Club memberships are available at the course clubhouse. For more information, call Booker at 874-4653.
