Wrangell’s Briana Schilling nails a grounder in last Sunday’s game against Petersburg. Schilling also had an in-the-park home run against the Lady Vikings during the game.
Lady Wolves’ pitcher Marsha McCay came into the game late against Petersburg. McCay also had a run during the first game of the double-header.
The Lady Wolves hosted the Petersburg Lady Vikings softball team for one last pair of games for the 2013 season – and saw their neighbors to the north walk away with two victories, each in the double digits.
The first inning of Sunday’s double-header against Petersburg started out with the Lady Vikings holding an 8-4 lead – and saw a pair of runs from Sarah Tate. Each team only scored two runs apiece in the second inning, with Ruby Brock and Raven Hansen scoring for Petersburg, and Darian Meissner and McKenna Harding scoring for the Lady Wolves.
Petersburg had another breakaway in the third as they scored six runs off the bats of Brock, Hansen, Courtney Niedefer, Kyla Willis, Adanna Kvernvik and Catherine Cardenas. Wrangell’s single run in the inning was made by Kacie Galla to give the Vikings a 16-7 lead.
Wrangell’s best outing of the day came in the bottom of the fifth inning when they were able to score six runs. Briana Schilling, on a pair of errors by Petersburg, was able to hit an in-the-park homer after runs from Meissner, Harding, Galla, Marsha McCay and Erica Smith – for a final score of 23-13 in favor of the Vikings.
Petersburg freshmen players Willis and Cardenas each gave their thoughts about the game and the short season where their team only faced Wrangell in non-league games.
“It was a fun season,” Willis said. “Oh my goodness, it was fun, fun, fun. We got to run a lot this year and have fun with our teammates. We also joked around a lot during the season. We did pretty well today, I think, because we also talk a lot to each other on the field and have been playing together for about three years as a group now.”
Cardenas, who is also a freshman, said, “The best part of the season for me was playing the game because it’s so much fun. It’s a lot different than baseball and we practiced our fielding a lot this year, as well as throwing, so I think that has helped us out a lot.”
Schilling, a recent Wrangell graduate, played her last game in red and white for the team and said was she was disappointed to end the final game on a down note – but enjoyed herself nonetheless.
“It would have been a better game if we had done more fielding,” she said. “We didn’t play as well as a team as I would have liked. But, in the end, it was a fun game even though it would have been nice to have a win.”
Schilling, who played for the Lady Wolves will attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo and plans on playing intramural sports there.
The Lady Wolves also fell 18-3 in the second game of the afternoon.
