Haa Aaní sponsors business development competition

The Haa Aaní Community Development Fund is joining up with The Nature Conservancy to promote sustainable economic development in the region.

The Haa Aaní Community Development Fund and The Nature Conservancy have created the Path to Prosperity Sustainable Business Concept Development Competition. P2P is open to individuals, for-profit businesses or tribal entities in Southeast Alaska. Business ideas may include a new business or expansion of an existing business.

Russell Dick, president and CEO of Haa Aaní, said the competition would help spur business development in the region.

“This unique partnership between Haa Aaní and The Nature Conservancy is ideal for the development of a regional infrastructure that provides both technical and financial resources necessary to encourage and reward innovation and entrepreneurial endeavors throughout our rural Southeast communities,” Dick said. “The Path to Prosperity competition signifies our belief that entrepreneurs are critical to sustaining economies in these communities and throughout our region.”

Norman Cohen, Southeast Alaska program director for The Nature Conservancy, said the development of sustainable resource-based business ideas will improve the quality of life for Alaskans.

”The Nature Conservancy is excited to be partnering with Haa Aaní to support new entrepreneurs in Southeast Alaska, as entrepreneurs are critical to a successful economy,” Cohen said. “The Conservancy believes that this competition is a creative means of promoting conservation by developing businesses that sustainably use the region’s natural resources and diversify the economic opportunities within communities as well as for the region as a whole.”

Applicants must be Southeast Alaska residents and businesses must be based in the region. All applications must include a business idea that is based on the independent thinking of the applicant. Duplicating or copying an already existing or recognized business or franchise is not allowed.

For more information on the competition call Sealaska at 907-586-9251.
