Wolves record nine personal bests

Runners recorded nine personal bests at the Juneau Cross-country meet Saturday.

“It was a really great meet for us,” said coach Monty Buness. “I think in 20 plus years of coaching I’ve never seen that (many personal bests).”

Bryce Gerald again led the pack across the line and dropped his time to 17:45, down 27 seconds from the previous meet in Wrangell Sept. 15. That was good enough for second place among the small schools, and twelfth overall. Robbie Marshall finished 18:16, four seconds off of Gerald’s personal best from the Wrangell meet, seventh among small schools, 22nd overall.

The times were especially surprising giving the difficulty of Juneau’s course, Buness said.

“That’s the toughest course in our whole conference,” he said.

The improved performance puts a possible state conference appearance back on the itinerary for the Wolves, Buness said.

“We’ve got a lot at stake,” he said. “We kind of know exactly what we have to do to get there.”

While the Wolves still placed fourth among the small schools, the team scores were much tighter at Juneau than at Wrangell. While Sitka was out in front by 75 points, with a team score of 114, a mere four points separated Craig at 189, Skagway at 191 and Wrangell at 193.

Dawson Miller came in third for the Wolves at 20:31. Behind him, Amos Comstock recorded 21:13, besting his previous personal best by more than 100 seconds. Sam Prysunka recorded a time of 21:29, followed by Sig Decker at 21:31 and Mikey Ottesen at 22:09. Mason Dingwall brought up the rear at 22:29.

Girls Results

The girls’ team wasn’t in contention for a team score because of small personnel and was plagued for the second week with injuries.

Kimberly Cooper led the girls with a time of 24:30. She placed 26th among the small schools and 41st overall.

“Kimberly is still running hurt,” Buness said. “She did as good as she could.”

Dorah Voltz, meanwhile, shaved almost a minute and thirty seconds off of her best time to finish at 26:14 and became the ninth Wrangell runner to record a personal best.

“Dorah ran a very good race,” Buness said.
