Wolves open season with good Petersburg showing

The Wrangell Wolves wrestling team came out of the weekend with a positive performance in Petersburg.

The Wolves finished third among the school competing, and trounced much bigger schools. They finished the Petersburg tournament four points in front of Sitka and a point behind Mt. Edgecumbe.

“All of the Wrangell Wolves did extremely well this past weekend in the Petersburg Invitational,” said coach Jeffrey Rooney.

Sophomore Roger Miller and Junior Jeffrey Rooney Jr. led the way, collecting a pair of first place finishes in their weight classes, and garnering 22 points each for the Wolves. Neither Miller nor Rooney Jr. lost during the two-day tournament.

“Roger (Miller) is a fierce competitor and his diligence is paying off,” Rooney said.

Miller wrestled in the 132-lb weight class, while Rooney Jr. wrestled in the 182-lb weight class.

Freshman Sig Decker secured a second place and 18 points for the team, and four pins.

Seniors Alex Cano and Luke Gunderson, wrestling in the 120-lb and 138-lb class respectively each secured a third place. Behind them, freshman wrestler Alisa Heller secured a 4th place finish in the 98-lb class.

Freshman Sam Armstrong placed fifth in the 126-lb class and older brother Chet Armstrong secured fifth place in the 160-lb class.
