Miller, Rooney lead the pack at Hoonah

The Wolves took third at their second away meet of the season, Oct. 18 and 19.

The high school wrestling team fielded seven of 11 wrestlers at Hoonah. Junior Jeffery Rooney, Jr. and sophomore Roger Miller placed first in the 182-lb class and 132-lb class respectively.

“Roger brought home seven wins this weekend with five of them coming by way of pin,” head Coach Jeffery Rooney wrote in a summary of the event.

Jeffery Rooney, Jr. managed only four pins, but was still good enough for first place.

Behind them, freshman Sig Decker finished second in the 106-lb weight class, despite taking an injury default after injuring his shoulder in the later rounds of his last match.

The default was unfortunate, the elder Rooney said.

“Every match in the season counts and not a single competitor wants to receive a victory or loss in this manner,” he said. “We are hopeful of a quick recovery and anticipate him finishing well in meets to come.”

Senior Alex Cano contributed a third place finish in the 126-lb category. That category proved particularly competitive after coaches combined the 120-lb and 126-lb classes, the elder Rooney said.

Cano “came home with a nice victory after defeating a rival from last year,” he said.

Freshman Sam Armstrong took fifth place in the same weight class. Freshman Alisa Heller placed 5th in the 98-lb weight class. Senior Luke Gunderson earned a fifth place in the 138-lb weight class.

The Wolves continue their season this weekend with the lone home meet of the year at the high school.
