Lady Wolves lose nailbiters to Klawock, Craig

The girls volleyball team was eager to size up the regional competition going into an invitational at Craig this weekend.

Craig, Klawock and Wrangell sit atop the rankings for the Region V conference at first, second and third respectively. The invitational represented one last chance to test out the competition going into this weekend’s seeding tournament in Haines, according to head coach Jessica Whitaker.

“It was kind of just pick-up games to get a look at each other,” she said. “Especially right before the seeding tournament, it’s nice size up your competition again.”

The weekend on Prince of Wales led off with a meet against the Klawock Chieftans, according Whitaker.

The junior varsity Lady Wolves showed promise early, Whitaker said.

“They were setting up the ball more consistently than they were at prior matches at home,” she said.

The varsity match up was competitive, but ended in a loss.

“We weren’t able to pull off any wins,” she said. “They have some pretty tough servers coming out of Klawock and we couldn’t pick up a few of them and we couldn’t make the catch-up on our end.”

A Craig match up the following night also ended in a loss, primarily because of a corps of skilled Lady Panthers upperclassmen, Whitaker said.

“Our back-row was getting attacked,” she said.

Match ups Saturday were more competitive, Whitaker said.

“We took Craig to five games,” she said.

The Lady Wolves also recorded the season’s only injury so far, Whitaker said, when outside hitter/middle hitter junior Alex Campbell sprained an ankle going up against another girl.

The Lady Wolves continue their season this weekend at the seeding tournament in Haines.
