The Alaskan Native Sisterhood and Brotherhood hosted their annual Christmas party at the Stikine Native Organization building last Saturday afternoon.
Children watched movies, sang Tlingit versions of famous Christmas carols, decorated cookies and counted the sugar-filled hours until Santa comes (though he was unable to make a scheduled appearance Saturday). Each child got a bag of popcorn and a stocking filled with goodies. Mark Gunderson provided oranges.
This year marked the first party held in the renovated SNO building, said ANS
Local President Christine Jenkins. Last year's party was held in the American Legion Hall while renovations were being completed.
"We just bring what we can," she said.
Jenkins's family has been involved with the ANS since the organization's beginning in 1914. Her nieces were also present at the party, representing the third generation of participation in the ANS.
Planning for the Christmas party came together in the last week, Jenkins said.
ANB Vice President Harry Churchill said the event was intended for the whole community.
"What's good about this is it's for the whole community, whether you're native or non-native," he said.
Churchill and Jenkins thanked local ANB and ANS members and volunteers for helping to organize the get-together.
Attendees said they enjoyed the party.
"It's always a fun party, even for the kids at heart like me," said Caroline Demmert.
