Recently, a well known world figure passed away. His passing was honored by countries and leaders around the world. Flags were lowered to half-staff. Even right here on our small, remote island our flags were lowered. What made this public figure so revered and respected by much of the world? You could use many words to describe him, but I believe one word stands out among them all, that word is Forgiveness. Nelson Mandela devoted his life to ending apartheid in South Africa. For his efforts, he was wrongfully imprisoned for 27 years by his political opponents. After his release from prison, he went on to become the president of South Africa. He could have used his power to lock up his opponents or done even worse to them. But Mr. Mandela chose to forgive. “As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison,” Mandela recalled. His choice to forgive even in extraordinary circumstances endeared him to the world.
John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave…” He not only gave, but He FORgave all of humanity through the birth and sacrifice of His son Jesus. As we celebrate the birth of Christ this Christmas season, we remember that He so loved us that He forgave our sins and gave us a life of meaning and purpose, the best gift we could ever receive!
