Close Up group returns from DC, New York

The Wrangell High School Close Up group returned Monday from a student government trip to Washington DC and New York.

The group – which included 13 students and two adults – spent six days in Washington DC learning about American history and politics, then went to New York to experience more history and culture.

Close Up was founded in 1971 by a group of educators concerned about participation in government. The group aims to teach participants to seek out multiple sources of information, pay attention to world events, ask questions, and participate in communities and politics.

Students and an adult also named their favorite highlights: Cody Thomassen – the Lincoln Memorial and Times Square; Michael Ottesen – Arlington Cemetery and Times Square; Kimberly Cooper – the Lincoln Memorial and the top of Rockefeller Center; Darian Meissner – the Liberal vs. Conservative Debate and Rockefeller Center; Hannah Armstrong – Martin Luther King Memorial and Ellis Island; Malachi Cole – the Botanical Garden and the Broadway show "Cinderella"; Corey Goicoechea – the Lincoln Memorial and Rockefeller Center; Jasmine Meyer – Arlington Cemetery and the 9/11 Memorial; Kyla Teat – the Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean Memorials and the Statue of Liberty; Arthur Acuna – the Iwo Jima Memorial and "Cinderella"; Kacie Galla – Arlington Cemetery and "Cinderella"; Charlie Colier – The Crime and Punishment Museum and "Cinderella; Bryce Gerald – The Lincoln Memorial and Rockefeller Center; teacher Brian Merritt – The Crime and Punishment Museum and "Cinderella."
