Though the comment period officially ended Sept. 15, the Wrangell Ranger District of the United States Forestry Service is still seeking public input for an upcoming dock project in Anan Bay.
“To me it's kind of an open process,” said Ranger Bob Dalrymple. “We're open to input pretty much any time.”
The district uses this input as it prepares an environmental assessment, which should be available for public comment later this fall.
The wildlife observatory is located about 23 miles southeast of Wrangell on the mainland, part of the Tongass National Forest system, it's a notable bear-watching destination during the summer,
The small floating dock at Anan Bay would boost safety for visitors to Anan Wildlife Observatory by providing them with a flat, stable surface as they disembark from or board boats and floatplanes. Currently, visitors have to traverse the tideland beach to reach the trailhead.
The project would also include construction of additional outhouse facilities and improvements to the observatory's half-mile trail system.
Comments can be sent to Anan Dock Project, Wrangell Ranger District, P.O. Box 51, Wrangell, AK 99929, or be
