Wrangell High School's cross-country season came to a good finish, as six of its
runners made it to the
Cross Country State Championship hosted by Bartlett High School in Anchorage on Saturday.
"The kids did really well at State for cross-country,"
said Jack Carney, activity director for Wrangell Public Schools.
He said Bryce Gerald beat his personal record from the regional meet in Ketchikan by taking eighth overall in the 1-3A race at State, with a time of 17:22.8. This climaxed a streak of better times over the season.
Amy Jenson finished in 15th, at a time of 21:06; Reyn Hutten placed 17th at 21:08; Kimberly Cooper in 33rd, 22:44; Darian Meissner in 61st, 25:38; and Kaylauna Churchill in 62nd, 26:02. The girls' team came in seventh overall and won the All-Academic Award by having the best grade point average of any 1-3A team.
Carney said the award "shows not only the high level of achievement of these individual athletes, but also the caliber of education they are getting here in Wrangell."
"It was awesome," Meissner said of the meet, her first time making it to the state-level championship. "The experience was great. Just being with the team, it's like a whole other family," added Meissner. Graduating this year, she plans to join the United States Coast Guard.
"I think it went really well," said Cooper. Also a senior this year, this season was her fourth and final with the Wolves. Wanting to continue in the sport, she plans to try out for her college team.
"They represented Wrangell so well! I am proud of these kids," said the team's coach, Jenn Davies. This was her first year coaching the school team, and the runners had positive things to say of her.
"Jenn was a lot of fun," Cooper said of her coach.
She felt Davies pushed the team enough to accomplish their best. "I hope she stays."
"If this season is any
predictor in the years to come, our cross-country team has a lot of success ahead of them," Carney predicted. "I'm looking forward to next season."
