Wolves serve three for five at volleyball seeding

Wrangell's Lady Wolves volleyball team performed well last week, as the borough hosted this year's High School North Seeding Tournament.

"Things went without a hitch," Wrangell Public Schools Superintendent Patrick Meyer commented. There were no problems to speak of, and visiting players found places to stay among local families for the three-day tournament. "This community always opens up their arms," he said.

Preceding the varsity tournament on the evening of Oct. 16, the Wolves' junior varsity girls played Metlakatla's, showing well against them.

The Lady Wolves varsity team won its first two matches of the tournament on Friday against Metlakatla and Haines. In both, Wrangell swept its way to victory.

In a tightly contested match versus Craig that evening, the Cougars narrowly took it after winning the third set, 25-18.

The next day, the Wolves handily won the game against Skagway in another three-set sweep. The final game of the tournament against Klawock proved to be a tougher match-up; the Wolves were swept in all three sets.

"Everything went pretty much as expected," commented the team's coach, Jessica Whitaker.

"We have a lot of new players on the team," said Jack Carney, activities coordinator for Wrangell Public Schools.

"The first tournament, they did pretty well. This tournament they did much better," he said. "I just think they're going to get better as they get more comfortable with each other."

In particular, the team has had to fill the shoes of its former setter and has been readjusting its defensive setup since the previous weekend's matches.

"They did really well at adapting and making those changes," Whitaker said. "Our upperclassmen really stepped up," she added.

Senior Kacie Galla did a particularly good job at defense.

"She really shined," her coach said.

Junior Katy Barger also distinguished herself. "She made some amazing saves," Whitaker recounted. "She didn't give up."

Whitaker and the team will be flying out to Sitka today to play other 2A, 3A, and 4A schools at an All-Comers Tournament.
