Work on Cassiar Street is at a temporary standstill as contractors and Wrangell Public Works wait for a spot of clear weather to finish pouring concrete.
As of Tuesday, the block behind Irene Ingle Public Library was finished and crews were working their way down from the street's north end.
Estimating the paving to be about a third done, Borough Manager Jeff Jabusch expected workers need a three-day window of clear weather to finish pouring concrete. They are hoping such an opportunity comes soon, before the weather gets any colder.
"They're kind of up against it here," said Jabusch. Public Works members and the contractor were going to meet Tuesday to discuss their options.
"The last thing they want to do is leave it like that for the winter," said Jabusch. "We're doing everything we can to get the rest of it paved."
The street project is funded through $1.5 million in grants through the state departments of Environmental Conservation and Community and Economic Development.
"We're extremely happy with how the bid turned out," Jabusch said. The project has come in under budget, allowing additional improvements to be figured into the final plan.
The city opted for concrete rather than asphalt, which should give the street a considerably longer lifespan. In addition to the new surface, the street has seen widening in parts as well as the inclusion of a turnaround at its north end suitable for emergency vehicles to use.
