Petersburg plays Wrangell in inter-squad match

The Wolves played a close inter-squad volleyball scrimmage against the Petersburg Vikings at home Tuesday evening.

"The schedule worked out wonderfully," said the Vikings' coach, Jaime Cabral. The team approaches the end of two by-weeks before heading to 3A regionals this weekend.

Next year Petersburg will move to 2A play, returning to direct competition with the Wolves on a more regular basis. Cabral and Wrangell coach Jessica Whitaker have each said they look forward to their teams seeing more of each other on the court.

The best-of-five match began with the Wolves taking an initial lead, taking first blood in the first two games and maintaining momentum. Game one ended 25-15, with Wrangell answering a series of aggressive spikes by the Vikings with lots of saves and good returns.

Game two saw the Wolves overcome an early Petersburg lead, with a tightly contested finale ending 27-25. Roles subsequently reversed midway through, with the Vikings taking the next three games.

Before the match-up, Whitaker took time to recognize her team's outgoing class of seniors, most of whom she has coached for some time.

Middle hitter/blocker Caroline Ward plans to attend University of Texas to study law. "She's been doing phenomenally this year," Whitaker said.

Darian Meissner, the team's defensive specialist, will attend the Coast Guard Academy after graduation. "She does an amazing job," her coach said, adding that Meissner's accuracy shall be missed.

Middle hitter/blocker Kacie Galla will head to Portland State to pursue creative writing. "She leads our team with kills and hits," said Whitaker.

On the junior varsity team, Kelhi Shilts plans to take up elementary education at Brigham Young University.

"She is a hard worker. She is a positive person to have on our court."

Charlie Colier, another J.V. Player, plans to go to Eastern Washington University.

"She has really come along," the coach commented, adding that she was another positive light on the team.

And team manager Corey Goicoechea will also be heading to Eastern Washington, to pursue a nursing degree.

Of her current varsity team, Whitaker said only five will return to play next year. This leaves a lot of space available for the current J.V. squad to fill.

The Wolves host Klawock at home on Friday. Next weekend, the team heads to Craig for the South Seeding Tournament.
