Children in Wrangell interested in getting a bit of bowling in this winter are invited to come to the Elks Lodge #1595 on Saturday afternoons.
The Elks have been active in Wrangell for about 70 years, and the club’s bowling alley has been a long-standing fixture. While they in the past have put on activities for local youth, lodge secretary Shirley Clark said “this is the first one we’ve done as far as bowling.”
“It’s for all the kids,” explained Pamela Oglend, the lodge’s bartender. First putting the idea before the lodge board of trustees, for the past month and a half Oglend has been fixing up lunch and refreshments and opened the club’s doors every weekend.
“We supply everything. It’s all free,” she said. “Every week I’ve tried to do a fun, interactive treat for them.” For instance, this past weekend Oglend devised “brownie pops” – brownies fastened on a stick that kids can dip in chocolate and sprinkles.
Oglend explained her goal is to give kids something to do during the winter. “Somewhere that is safe and fun,” she said.
So far there have been between 20 to 25 children turning up with their parents or grandparents. Activities are aimed for all ages, and the bar is closed down for its duration, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Along with her regular work schedule it might make for a long day, but Oglend doesn’t mind. “It’s so fulfilling, just the look on kids’ faces,” she said.
The weekend bowl is one of the ways Wrangell’s Elks has opened its doors to community youth. Oglend explained they hosted a Halloween party this year as well, featuring treats and a costume contest. The Elks are also arranging to hold a Christmas party next month.
The organization also opens its doors to adults. A Veterans Day dinner is planned for this evening for all veterans, members and non-members alike. Those interested in attending can call 874-3716 to make a reservation.
