WHS volleyball and wrestling teams compete in Tok and Sitka

Wrangell High School's volleyball team traveled out to faraway Tok Friday for a weekend tournament, picking up wins against Glennallen, Nenana and Tri-Vallley and getting edged out by Tok High School in a close three-game contest.

"The team performed well although they were missing two varsity players," reported the team's coach, Jessica Whitaker. "The girls were able to come together and make quick adjustments."

Whitaker said that while passing is improving, the team still needs to increase its serving strength and accuracy.

Kacie Galla was selected for the All-Tournament Team, and the team had time to visit Santa's Village in nearby North Pole. The Wolves' next match begins today in Craig at the South Seeding Tournament.

For wrestling, the Wolves did well at Mt. Edgecumbe in Sitka Friday and Saturday, placing third behind the Edgecumbe and Ketchikan teams.

Jeffery Rooney Jr. and Justus Mikkelsen each took first place for their 182 and 220 weight classes, respectively.

Four wrestlers took second place in their weight classes: Orion Heller (98), Alisa Heller (106), Ian Jenson (113) and Darren Shilts (152).

Also for 98, JD Barratt placed third in his class.
