Lady Wolves finish off season with Sportsmanship Award

This year’s season draws to a close for Wrangell High School’s volleyball team, after finishing third in Haines at the Southeast Regional Tournament last weekend.

“It was long, but good,” coach Jessica Whitaker said of the weekend. She said her team experienced some serving difficulties on account of the lower ceilings in Haines, but the girls were still able to pull off victories against Metlakatla, Haines and Skagway.

Players Kacie Galla, Darian Meissner and Teresa Flores were all chosen for this year’s All-Conference Team.

“That’s a reflection of their entire season,” Whitaker said. The top twelve girls for the entire region are so honored, and the coach felt that the inclusion of three Wrangell players reflected positively on the team’s efforts this year.

Reflecting their efforts off-court, all four seniors on the varsity team were chosen for the All-Academic team: Galla, Meissner, Caroline Ward and Charlie Colier.

The team as a whole was also picked by referees and tournament organizers to receive the Sportsmanship Award.

“I was happy with that,” said Jack Carney, Wrangell Public Schools’ activities director. “That was quite an honor.”

“The girls played really well, they were really friendly with everybody on and off the court,” Whitaker explained.

On Sunday at 6 p.m., the girls will play against a team made up of Wrangell alumni.

“That will be a fun event for them,” said Whitaker. Afterward, the teams will have an award ceremony to note their achievements this season.

Looking ahead, Whitaker said the teams will be losing six seniors, including some of their key players.

“It’s going to be a hard road to travel,” she explained, but with some hard work Whitaker feels confident her players will step up to the challenge filling those positions will pose.
