This light is for all of us

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Those who lived in a land of deep darkness, on them light has shined…For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:2, 6)

I was afraid of the dark when I was a kid. I wanted a nightlight in my room and I asked for my bedroom door to stay open so I could see the light from the other rooms. I’m not exactly sure what I was afraid of, but I am still not very comfortable in the dark.

I have experienced other kinds of darkness too. Fear, anxiety, separation from loved ones, and worries about an unknown future have covered me like a dark cloud from time to time.

It is in those times that any amount of light is most noticeable. A friend to reassure me, a phone call from my son or daughter, and words from Scripture like these from Isaiah serve as shining lights of God’s love.

A child has been born for us who brings light into our darkness. This child, Jesus Christ, experienced the fullness of human life and meets us in our darkness. Jesus shines the light of God’s love in acts of forgiveness, companionship, encouragement, and always in God’s Word.

This light is for all. This light is for you.
