Wolves basketball season starts out with wins

The year's basketball season began well for Wrangell High School teams, with the boys squads winning all four of the games it hosted against Haines High School last weekend.

"It was just nice to start off with wins," said Jack Carney, Wrangell High School's activities director.

The varsity boys basketball team played a strong game at home Friday night, winning with 63 points over Haines' 37. Bryce Gerald scored 19 points in the game, and Tyler Gillen had 12. The Wolves' junior varsity team also beat Haines in its Friday evening game, 41 to 35.

The JV squads faced off again the next evening in an exciting match, with the game running into double overtime.

"That was a lot of fun," commented Carney.

The Glacier Bears came back from behind early in the fourth quarter, tying things up at 49 points with less than a minute left before pulling ahead with only 11 seconds remaining. Tyler Teat managed to tie the score back up with a two-point buzzer beater at 51 points.

It was a tightly-played four minutes, with the score crawling up to 54 points apiece by the end of the first overtime period. More time was added, but Wrangell was able to pull ahead after Haines lost two of its players to fouls. The game ended in a Wolves victory, 67 to 60.

The varsity squad won its second game as well, beating Haines 47 to 32. Gillen and Blake Stokes each scored 13 points in Saturday's game.

"The girls also did really well," Carney said.

Playing in Haines, the Lady Wolves' squads won three of their four games. The varsity girls won both of their games, 45 to 36 on Friday and 56 to 20 on Saturday.

Carney pointed out that a number of the girls on the team have been putting in additional practice in preparation for the season. "That extra work they put in it really shows," he said.

The junior varsity girls had a close game Friday, losing 14 points to Haines' 15. They won the following evening, though, 31 to 20.

Both Wrangell's boys and girls teams will be hosting Petersburg this weekend for their Homecoming match-ups. Play begins tomorrow in the school gym at 2:30 p.m. with the JV girls, followed by JV boys at 4:15. Varsity boys begin play at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 7:15.

Saturday's schedule will be the same, with the high school's homecoming dance to follow the final game in the Stikine Middle School commons.

"This will be a big weekend," Carney promised.
