Wrangell Wolves split evenly in Metlakatla

Wrangell high school boys basketballers split with Metlakatla last weekend, with the junior varsity and varsity squads each winning and losing a game.

The junior varsity players lost Friday night’s game, but turned things around the next evening with a win.

The varsity Wolves won in Friday’s game, 39 to 36. In the game Blake Stokes scored 14 points, with three assists. Tyler Gillen was right behind with 12 points, also snagging three steals. Players Bryce Gerald and Mikey Ottesen were also there with rebounds, six and three, respectively.

“It was a pretty close game,” said Jack Carney, Wrangell Public Schools’ activity director.

“I thought we played pretty well,” said the team’s coach, Ray Stokes.

Saturday’s game proved a bit tougher, with the Chiefs stepping up their defense.

“They adjusted real well,” said Jason Clark, the Wolves’ assistant coach. The junior Stokes found himself with tightened coverage, shifting the momentum.

“Metlakatla really realized he’s kind of the guy they want to stop,” Coach Stokes observed.

In the end, the Wolves lost the game 30 to 42.

“I think we learned a little bit though, and that’s the main thing,” Stokes said.

They won’t have long to wait for a rematch, with Metlakatla coming to Wrangell this weekend.

“Hopefully we can get the better of them,” said Carney.

The JV girls teams will begin play tomorrow in the high school gym at 2:30 p.m., followed by the JV boys at 4:15, varsity boys at 6, and varsity girls at 7:45. The same times Saturday, the JV boys will start off, followed by JV girls, varsity girls and finishing with the varsity boys.

“I think we’re going to be really competitive,” Stokes said. Looking ahead, he said the team will work on its shot selection and reducing turnovers.
