Following closely on its previous weekend in Metlakatla, Wrangell High School's boys basketball won three of its four games when it hosted the Chiefs on Friday and Saturday.
Both the varsity and junior varsity squads won their games Friday. The JV Wolves pulled ahead in the second quarter, building on that lead and finishing 46 to the Chiefs' 29.
Varsity played a close first half Friday, trading leads with Metlakatla before finally pulling ahead in the second half. The Wolves won 46 to 38.
The next evening, there was a lot of back-and-forth in the first half of the varsity match. Both teams' defenses were up, with the score only at 12 to Metlakatla's 18 at the half. Wrangell had closed the gap by the end of the third, just behind at 30 to 33.
In the fourth quarter Wrangell drew up to within three points, but Metlakatla held its lead, winning 58 points to the Wolves' 49.
Bryce Gerald led the team in points over the weekend, scoring 27 overall and making six free-throws.
The JV squad played a close first half during its Saturday game, holding a lead over the Chiefs at the end of the second quarter, 25 to 22. After a three-point buzzer beater thrown by Wrangell player Sam Prysunka at the close of the third quarter, Metlakatla rallied in the fourth, pulling ahead.
Dawson Miller scored two to lurch back ahead, 38 to 37.
Garrett Miller hooked a three-pointer with three minutes left on the clock, putting Wrangell into a slight lead. Though Metlakatla netted three points at the very end, Wrangell won the game 44 to 42.
"The second half we played a lot better," said the team's coach, Ray Stokes. Overall, he said the Wolves need to work on fouls and finishing, with players improving their shooting percentage.
"We're going to have to improve," he said, if the team is to perform well at regionals in March.
"It was great to get three out of four," said Jack Carney, Wrangell Public Schools' activities director. "I'm thinking it's looking like a promising year."
The weekend puts Wrangell's team at 4-2 in the conference. After playing in Petersburg this weekend, the team will have two more weekends against Craig and another against Haines before heading to Ketchikan for Region V Tournament.
