Wolves sweep final home games

For their final home games for the regular season, Wrangell's Wolves won all four of its games against the Craig Panthers. The teams had poor weather to beat as well, having to shift forward the games' schedules to Feb. 4 and 5. "It was just awesome to see them win," said Jack Carney, the school's athletics coordinator. Aside from one ejection for a thrown elbow, he said the team did very well during their games. For Wednesday's game, the varsity boys won 47 to 34, winning again the following night 66 to 52. Junior varsity played a much closer game Wednesday, finishing off 66 to 57. "The JV game was back and forth, and then we pulled ahead in the end. It was great," said Carney. JV won again the next night as well, 54 to 41. Meanwhile playing in Craig, the Lady Wolves opted to return by ferry rather than by charter for safety reasons. Their games were also moved back by a day, allowing them more time to travel back. The Wrangell girls' varsity and JV squads lost all four of their games. "They had some pretty tough competition at Craig," said Carney. They will have the chance for a rematch tomorrow, as they host the Lady Panthers over the weekend. The boys team will likewise be traveling to Craig, where they will have a chance to rank first in their division ahead of Region V. "If we beat them just once over there, we'll be set for first," said Carney. If they do well there, the team may then stand to proceed to State. "It'd be pretty exciting."
