JUNEAU (AP) — Alaska lawmakers are expected to discuss a new draft of a bill to decriminalize marijuana that mirrors state alcohol regulations.
As of Feb. 24, adults 21 years and older can possess up to an ounce of marijuana under a ballot issue passed in November. Lawmakers have been working on a bill that accomplishes that, and also clarifies other related state laws.
The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to review the 91-page draft during a Monday hearing.
Republican Sen. John Coghill of North Pole says the draft is based on the state's alcohol regulations.
It removes the drug from the state's list of controlled substances, but then makes use of it in many situations illegal, including prohibiting public use and driving under the influence. It also specifically allows employers to prohibit use.
