Wolves win away games, head to Region V

The Wrangell Wolves basketball team finished its regular season with a bang, beating out Craig at the Glacier Bear's home court Feb. 20 and 21.

"I think our boys had a pretty good time up there," said Wrangell Public Schools

activities director, Jack Carney. "The boys' games were pretty close to a blowout."

During Friday's game, the varsity Wolves beat the Glacier Bears 64 to 35. Blake Stokes had six points and six assists during the game, and Bryce Gerald scored 12 points and secured five rebounds.

"Each player contributed in some fashion," said the

team's coach, Ray Stokes.

His players kept up a steady offense and were able to create some favorable turnovers.

Then on Saturday, Wrangell won again handily, 57 to 18. Stokes and Gerald were again on fire that game, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively. Gerald also had 10

rebounds, eight assists and six steals.

"He just filled the stat book that night," assistant coach Jason Clark commented.

"The boys played very well I thought, both nights," Stokes said. "I'm very excited for them in finishing the year up like they did."

Junior varsity also played well, splitting games with the Glacier Bears.

"They had a good weekend as well," said Stokes.

During junior varsity's Friday game, Haines edged out Wrangell in a close game, 46 to 44.

Wrangell then took the upper hand Saturday, beating Haines in another close match, 47 to 43.

"It was very fun to see my boys come out on top," said Clark.

At Region V next weekend in Ketchikan, the Wolves will play Metlakatla first. The

Chiefs have beaten every team in the region this season, but have split with Wrangell.

How the teams will

square off can be anyone's guess.

"I think it's definitely up for grabs," Stokes said.

For junior varsity the season is over, but the two coaches look forward to its players developing within the program in coming years.

"It was very competitive. It was fun," Clark said of their season. "It's kind of a good ending. I'm just really proud of how far they've come, and the hard work they've put in."
