Anan objections sought, Tongass to get new supervisor

The United States Forest Service (USFS) has released its Environmental Assessment, draft Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact for the floating dock at Anan Wildlife Observatory and trail safety improvements for Wrangell Ranger District.

Copies of these documents are available upon request from the Wrangell USFS office, or can be viewed online at www. fs.usda.gov/goto/R10/Tongass/AnanFloatingDock.

The project is currently

subject to the objection process of its predecisional administrative review. Objections to the proposed project can only be submitted by individuals

or organizations who have

previously submitted comments during scoping or other designated opportunities for public comment. These must be

submitted in a timely, specific, and written fashion, filed with the Tongass National Forest supervisor Forrest Cole’s office by April 17.

Objections and any related attachments should be filed via post, email, hand- or express delivery, or messenger service during regular office hours to Tongass National Forest Federal Building, 648 Mission Street, Ketchikan, Alaska 99901-6591, or objections-alaska-tongass@fs.fed.us. These can also be faxed at 907-228-6215.

If submitted electronically, objections need to be in a format compatible with the current version of Microsoft Word.

USFS also announced last week that outgoing

Tongass supervisor Cole would be succeeded by Earl Stewart in May after he retires this spring. Cole’s retirement brings to a close four decades of service to the Forest Service.

The Tongass is America’s largest national forest,

encompassing the majority of Alaska’s southeastern panhandle at 17 million acres. Previously, Stewart has served as USFS supervisor on the Coconino National Forest in Arizona since 2010.
