To the Editor:
On Saturday, April 4th, Wrangell’s Garnet Grit Betties roller derby team hosted both the Denali Destroyer Dolls from Wasilla, and The Sitka Sound Slayers from Sitka, for a total of three games played at Wrangell’s High School. We, the Sitka Sound Slayers, would like to give the Betties and the community of Wrangell a huge shout out and big thank you for holding this event and supporting roller derby in Alaska.
The Slayers were hugely impressed by the organization of this event by the Betties. Not only did they manage the event venue organization and set-up, but they went out of their way to help us get to Wrangell, house our team and make us comfortable. Anyone who has played sports in Southeast Alaska knows how expensive and difficult it can be to take your whole team out of town, and the Betties made this an experience of a lifetime for so many of our skaters. Many of us had never flown on a small plane or been to the lovely community of Wrangell or stayed in a bunkhouse or skated two games in one day! The Betties made this all possible for us, and they were gracious hostesses who embody the attitude and sportswomanship we love about roller derby and life in Southeast Alaska.
Thank you, Betties, for being awesome women, strong competitors and roller derby family!
